Costa Mesa is a city in Orange County, California, United States. It has a population of 197,746 as of the 2010 census. Over time, Costanera Boulevard acquired more commercial development including an original Jamba Juice chain store opened in 1984 which still operates at 9700 E Coast Highway (now called State Route 101). In recent years,Costa Mesa has seen significant gentrification with high-end apartments being built near City Hall Square and new bars being opened along El Camino Real (formerly known as Callejon Street) near Interstate 5/Merrill Road interchange eastbound and westbound lanes respectively. In 1915, when World War I started, many Americans who were unable to serve in Europe returned home and set up base camps along Highway 101 near Irvine andCosta Mesa. This area became known as "The Zone." The peninsula formed a natural housing area for these returning troops because there were no available military bases nearby that could be used by both sides during wartime. Over time, many more people have moved into this area due to its peaceful nature and good schools; today it is one ofCosta Mesa's most popular neighborhoods. During World War II (1941-1945), much activity took place on hand planes located at Palmdale Air Force Base just south of town on State Route 66 (now County Route 6). Throughout 1941-1945 thousands of people worked on various types of airplane production at PALMDALE Airport including Lockheed Martin Aircraft Co., Boeing Aircraft Inc., Douglas Aircraft Co., Grumman Aircraft Corp., North American Aviation Corporation (NAA), Consolidated Shipbuilding & Drydock Company (CSBC) and Willys-Overland Motors Incorporated (WOM). At PALMDALE Airport over 4500 workers produced aircraft including Convair P-38 Lightning fighter bombers, Lockheed F4U Corsair fighters/bombers/, Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomberighters/, Douglas A-20 Havoc medium bomber pilots/fighters/, Grumman GJE Tuskegee Airmen flying training aircraft/. Many jobs opened up after Pearl Harbor which resulted in even more Japanese immigrants coming to Costilla County during that time period!
The Costa Mesa coastline has been inhabited for more than 10,000 years. The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish missionaries in the 17th century. In 1821, a group of American volunteers under General Jose Maria de Buenaventura proposed that California be made a US territory. A referendum results in California being admitted as a US state on February 14, 1848. The town of Costa Mesa was founded on what is now Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) by entrepreneur Captain John Sutter and his wife Mary in 1851. In 1857, after California became an independent country, the original name for the town was changed to Pacific Beach because of its location on the equator at 12°30'N and 122°00'W. The first post office opened in 1865. In 1912, two building companies – Wohlgemuth & Co., which developed downtown Costa Mesa and Jansen’s Building Company which built Harbor City– merged to form Wohlgemuth-Jansen Corporation which continues to operate today as one of Costa Mesa's most significant businesses.
