Costa Mesa, California is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 16,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area. Costa Mesa is located on the Pacific Coast and has a Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and mild to cool winters. The city began as an agricultural outpost on El Camino Real in 1887, when Antonio José de Costa established a citrus grove there. In 1915, Donato Lomas bought 6 acres (2 hectares) of land from $1 per acre ($27 per hectare). He named it "Loma de Oro", Spanish for "Gold Hill". The name stuck and Lomas developed the business of selling mined gold near his property for underground mining operations (the first such operation in California). In 1925, after the death of Donato's son Manuel, Lomas' widow founded the Los Angeles branch of his company and continued running it until her husband's death in 1970; she then passed ownership to her son Eduardo Jr.. After World War II, many new immigrants arrived in Costa Mesa: Italians, Japanese Americans (particularly during World War II), Koreans (most from South Korea), Puerto Ricans, Guatemaltellers and others. The city grew rapidly following its incorporation as a City by Act of State in 1957; by 1967 it had reached its current size with 14th Street running north-south through downtown along Interstate 5/I-15 interchangearding First Avenue which forms its eastern border. By 2000 Costa Mesa had over 60 businesses employing 350 people generating over $380 million worth of economic activity annually statewide Throughout its history Costa Mesa has always been an open town accommodating everyone regardless their social or racial background while also maintaining close relationships with other communities within Southern San Diego County including Escondido which borders inland on the City limits but maintains strong cultural ties to Santa Ana County Many important institutions have come out of this diverse community including Academy Awards ceremonies where both coasts share delegates (Costa Mesa hosted 3 Oscars between 1960-'64), one high school’s partnership with University Park High School in Philadelphia for costumed dramatic performances called “Carnegie Hall Presents…” program that produced more than 40 productions each year . successive mayors have played significant roles throughout these years such as Rudy Garcia who took office after being elected Mayor twice consecutively; he increased funding for libraries & parks; Current Mayor Ricardo Lara took office Jan 1st 2013and has vowed to increase spending on infrastructure projects like public transportation system & widening I-5 roadways

In 1893, the City of Costa Mesa changed its name to "Costa Mesa" after a donation from Mr. J.C. Penney's family. The city is located in Southern Orange County and is home to over 100,000 residents. The history of Costa Mesa begins with Spanish settlers who arrived in the area in 1771. They erected small adobe homes near what is now Old Town Costa Mesa for their farm animals and local traders living along Mission Road (now State Route 1). By 1821, most of this land had been sold to José de Cadena y Valdez for $2 million dollars as part of Rancho Santa Margarita Mexican land grant. This sale created tension between Mexican settlers and Anglo Americans because it ceded large areas of valuable agricultural land to foreigners without giving back any in return to the Mexican people who had created these lands more than two centuries earlier! Some early San Diego County settlers also settled here but soon left after finding little success farming due to difficult soil conditions and lack of water resources available at that time. In 1836, Jose Antonio Reyes purchased a section of Rancho Rinconada which included what is now Riverside Boulevard east of SR-1 (present-day Powers Avenue). On January 8, 1837, Reyes sold this piece adjoining Rancho Rinconada to John Sutter for $3200 Dollars! The following year saw another important event when Sutter built his first store on what is now Fourth Street near present-day Main Street in downtownCosta Mesa! This store represented an early effort by Sutter to open up trade with inland Mexico City through buying goods from Mexicans living there as well as selling goods back into Mexico City himself! Sutter also started construction on a small cabin known as "El Pueblito" or "The Village", which served as his headquarters for many years until he moved permanently about 1850 CE when he developed Camp Pendleton Naval Station on Redondo Beach Island adjacent to today's Harbor Drive off SR-1 just southwest of Interstate 5 bridge across Highway 95W/SR- 116E! In 1849/50 CE James Waddell completed construction on Waddell Point lighthouse which later became known as DACA (Defender's Act lighthouse) during World War II!! In 1870 CE Captain Fortunato Bandini established himself at Point Conception mainlanding from present day Riverside Boulevard east past Powers Avenue then south beyond those boundaries almost unto Newport Coast before turning northeast onto Golden Hill Roadsteads paralleling US 101W/SR 118E about midway between Newport Coast and Seal Beach!! From here Captain Bandini could see both endsof Shark Bay harbor before sailing northwest out into Elkhorn Channel daily!!! Although not every morning Captain Bandini could be seen outside his anchorage!!! AfterCaptain Bandini's death circa 1880 CE new ownership transferred point Conception thenceforth straight down Catalina channel towards San Pedroshore where they situated themselves ashore!!! Today you can still glimpse evidence OFCaptain FortunatoBandini'S mast AND yards FROMhis rebuilt lighthouse!!!!! document dated Dec 11 2006
The original settlement in Costa Mesa was made up of two small villages, Foz and Almanzora, on the banks of the Santa Ana River. The first permanent residents were Europeans who lived there during the 17th century. They were Spanish colonists from Mexico who founded San Diego and Carlsbad Caverns. In 1821, a group of American soldiers under General Samuel Brannan invaded California and merged with the Mexican army to fight against Santa Ana's adobe walls. Afterward, many Americans followed them to California, including John Sutter and his band of Missionaries. One year earlier, Sutter had built Fort Point on San Pedro Bay in what is now Pacific Beach. When he died in 1846, his men organized into Companies H (Horseshoe), M (Mountain), G (Gold Rush), A (Alamosa), L (Lumberjacks) and E ( Engineers). Immediately after Sutter's death, his men began building a new fort at present-day Newport Beach to replace Fort Point. The first white settlers arrived in 1847 when Commodore James Kenedy sailed from Monterey with 240 barrels of oil that he had gathered from offshore islands off Mendocino County as part of an attempt to open up inland California for Navigation purposes. Kenedy named the town Covella after him because no one could find an adequate harbor for shipping in that vicinity. The first store opened in 1850 by J D Beall was located at Fourth Street near Sealup Boulevard just east of State Route 237
