Gun lights have been used in Costa Mesa, California for over a century. In 1892, the first gun light was purchased by John C. Fremont and installed on his ranch. The use of gun lights began to grow in popularity as they were seen as a warning Signal to other drivers that someone had got behind the wheel with a firearm. In 1915, the City of Costa Mesa passed an ordinance allowing the installation of public illumination devices at nightfall or during special operations such as police raids or searches. The first ever public display of gun lights took place on Oct 1st 1916 when around seventy people including Mayor Norris and Costa Mesa Supervisor Atherton viewed a demonstration by Haggerty & Sons Company of Philadelphia who manufactured electric gunsights called “The Gun-Lights”. These devices consisted of two metal plates attached to a rod which was held by a clamps above the car windscreen and could be turned on and off with an easily accessible switch located inside the light housing. In 1948, the city council decided that all streetlights must be equipped with either gun lights or power lines so that citizens would no longer have to fumble through dark streets in search for their way home after dark. This decision led to the development of longpole wiring systems which allowed for easy replacement or addition of new light fixtures without having to repaint entire streets each time one was added/removed. Today, gun lights are still used extensively in Costa Mesa; especially around busy intersections where it is necessary for motorists to know which side of the road you are on before making any turns or getting out at nightspots like bars and restaurants

Costa Mesa, California is a city located in the southern portion of Orange County, California. The population was 953,821 at the 2010 census. Costa Mesa is one of OC's most highly populated areas and has been nicknamed "The City of Oaks" for its many tree-lined streets and leafy neighborhoods. The city's major thoroughfare is State Route 1 which runs along its eastern border. The history of Costa Mesa dates back to 1894 when two men by the name of Harker and Durant purchased 3,000 acres (1,100 hectares) on the banks of the Santa Ana River from José Gomez de la Vega. Plaza San Diego was built in 1915 as a shopping center with three large department stores: J.C Penney, Macy's and Sears Roebuck & Co.. In 1924, The Huntington Library opened within walking distance of Plaza San Diego; it became known as "the library that began it all". In 1945, East Coast Air Lines established a small airport near downtown Costa Mesa after acquiring land east of Raley Field off Interstate 5. In 1948–49, Don Bruce started construction on what would become his largest project - the new University Village development across Main Street from Plazuela Park in downtown Costa Mesa. It included over 100 housing units and was completed in 1954. The university closed in 1966 but left an lasting legacy - Brucedesigned Don Bruce Way stretching southeast from University Village to Newport Beach Boulevard serves as a main drag through campus today. Costa Mesa was founded by the San Diego Company in 1821 as a small seaport on the Santa Barbara Channel. The town site was chosen because of its location at an ideal place for shipping goods and munitions to and from Mexican ports. The first permanent settler in Costa Mesa was José María del Valle, who arrived in 1827. In 1828, Costas Real y Cámpora, a company property owner, built a wooden piers near present-day Pacific Coast Highway and Airport Road. The company's wharf furnished an important early link between Costa Mesa and the rest of San Diego County. In 1834, Ayer & Garrido became the first post office in Costa Mesa when they opened a store on Sutter Boulevard. By 1840, there were six businesses operating in Costas Mesa: two stores, three livery stables, one millinery shop, and one blacksmith shop. On July 20th of that year (1840), Costa Mesa residents voted to annex more than half of downtown San Diego into their town limits; this action helped spur development along what is now Sutter Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway since it then would be easier to get goods through these new boundaries into town. In 1850, John Fonda erected his family's now- famed oak tree on Old Coast Guard Station Square south of Main Street; this event is commemorated annually by Point Reyes Day festivities that include concerts/restaurants/fairs at Old Coast Guard Station Square throughout the month of June. A group led by Jens Clausen purchased Josephine Rancho in 1865 from Manuel Nieto for $7000USD ($128K USD today). This land grant included part of what are now portions of Corona Heights and Mission Hills neighborhoods adjacent to SRPAs Parkview Drive (now Carlsbad Avenue) east of I-5 freeway exit #2 (then called West Side Drive). After years of hard work - including many floods due to heavy rains - Clausen's ranch turned out to be one of California's most productive dry farming areas with excellent crops such as grapes and honeydews Year round! The first Europeans to visit Costa Mesa were Spanish explorers in 1519. The area was named San Diego because of the abundance of shells at the time. In 1821, Rancho San Francisco was sold to José María Castro, who laid out a town called Pacific Beach on the beach. The town grew slowly until it became anモロッコ州 in 1911 when California statehood was granted to the nation. In 1916, a group of American citizens founded the Costa Mesa Civic Club as a means of promoting civic activity in Costa Mesa. The club's first meeting took place on December 12th and they were joined by two other groups six months later on February 9th. By 1916, Costa Mesa had a library, post office, telephone exchange and several businesses including A&P grocery store. In 1922, the city annexes part of neighboring Santa Ana which made it easier for people to get around since both cities shared one common public highway system. During World War II (1939-1945), many members from Costa Mesa served in the military and some properties within the city limits were used as airfields for fighter planes and bombers during that time period. Afterward, much of what is now downtownCosta Mesa was developed as housing stock increased with new subdivisions being built along State Street between Newport Boulevard and Winchester Avenue after World War II ended. On January 1st 1960, Anaheim annexed portions of southern Orange County making Costasme an enclave within Anaheim proper although Irvine also surrounds it on three sides forming what is known today as “the Laguna Seca Ring” stretching from Irvine south to Seal Beach eastward into Huntington Beach County
