Costa Mesa is a city in the San Diego County, California, United States. It was founded on December 15, 1947 by American expatriate Noel Kingsbury. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 as of the 2010 census. In addition to its downtown core and beachside neighborhoods, Costa Mesa has hillsides covered withpalm trees that provide an ample amount of open space for shooting ranges and other target practice. The city's first paper mill closed in 1913 but it re-opened in 1916 after being bought by William Wrigley Jr., who renamed it the Wrigley Paper Company. The company manufactured chewing gum and later other products until it merged with General Electric in 1998. The namesake of Costa Mesa is José María del Pico y Gómez de la Vega y Costilla (1763-1833), who served as Governor of Santa Barbara County from 1815 to 1821 and as President of Mexico from 1824 to 1830.Following his victory at Buena Vista on October 27, 1846, del Pico went into exile in San Francisco where he died three weeks later on November 2nd aged 71 years old. He had been impeached by Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna four months earlier after leading a military expedition against Ulysses S Grant during the Mexican–American War

By 1886, there were more than 10 businesses in Costa Mesa with over $1 million worth of merchandise sales annually! Some historians believe that this type of stocking may have been the first successful attempt at creating an infantryman’s “firearm belt” – a garment worn below the waist that assists with movement and stability while firing a weapon
