When the first Europeans arrived in San Diego County, they were greeted by Native Americans with spears and bows and arrows. The Indians knew about firearms but did not know how to use them. Some of the early European settlers, including Captain Peralta, built their homes on high hills overlooking the coast and used their fire pits to try to scare away the Indians. The first Europeans to settle in Coronado was a group of Spanish traders led by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. On October 14, 1542, Cabrillo sighted land that he thought might be an island. He named it San Diego and reported his sighting to his captain, Francisco de Haro. A group of English sailors sailed into California Bay on October 25, 1821, looking for a route to Asia bypassing China. They named their vessel Americana after Lieutenant Commander George Vancouver's ship HMS Beagle which had been stranded at sea in 1819-20. A party of twenty men under the command of Lieutenant John Cushing landed at Point Loma on November 11th but found no sign of any inland villages or ships so they continued westwards up San Diego Creek towards what is now Escondido (now part of Vista). Some members of this party went ashore at Point Conception where they met some local people who told them about an underground city called La Jolla (the Gull Island). The party then continued down San Diego Creek until they reached Laguna Beach where they camped for the night near what is now Harbor Boulevard east of State Street . As evening fell more people started coming ashore from all directions looking for a place to sleep without fear that these strange new arrivals would rob them or worse . soon enough there were so many people camping alongshore that there was not enough open space among the boulders for everyone to lay down without getting trampled . accordingly fires began burning all around even though it was still very cold outside as people tried to get some warmth from those already burning embers After darkness had fallen most people decided against continuing further tomorrow when visibility improved sufficiently we could see several small boats anchored near shore trying unsuccessfully persuasion by lightening flashes going off in different directions before finally sailing away again next morning while those remaining aboard Americana watched

Today, much of what is now Coronado was once part of Mission San Francisco de Asís; today’s mission is a contributing structure within Adobe Park located adjacent to Interstate 5 north of downtown San Francisco. Residential development began on Rincon Hill (now called Rincon Hill Terrace) towards the end of World War II; however, because this area falls within city limits rather than unincorporated county territory it does not enjoy full historical preservation status as do some other sections surrounding downtown San Francisco including Market Street and Hyde Street which are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places

The first permanent European settler in what is now California was José Altamont, who arrived in 1776. The next year, Juan Bautista de Anza explored and claimed the area for Spain. In 1821, Mexican land grantee Manuel Nieto acquired part of Alta California from Mexico. On September 14, 1846, Ulysses S. Grant delivered a note to Governor Edmund G. Bean ordering him to give up all claim to California except for parts of central valley which he had previously agreed to sell at $5 an acre to the United States government. The following day Mexican General Antonio Lopez Escobar attacked American forces at Adobe Walls near what is now Petaluma and emerged victorious; America claimed Los Angeles County as part of Alta California under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
