Gun targets have been a part of Coronado history for over 100 years. The first target was a white hickory tree that was donated by the town to the San Diego Rifle and Pistol Club in 1892. The club used it as their shooting range until 1934. In 1916, Mayor Julius Rosenwald gave the town two shotguns and 10 rounds of ammunition for each gun owner to shoot at targets on his property. In 1934, Coronado became an incorporated city and all existing city guns were confiscated. However,Coronado's rifle and pistol clubs continued to use target ranges on their own properties until 1978 when they moved away from City Limits Boulevard to Thornhill Road because of complaints about noise from those ranges. The last target shot at Thornhill Road was in 1984 when local resident Don Freeman took aim at a black bear with a .22 caliber rifle from his porch. Since then, only BBs or golf balls have been put up as targets on that property

When the United States acquired California in 1848, it added an area of mountains and valleys to its growing territory. The land was rich in resources, including gold and silver. To find these valuable assets, the US government set out to explore and map the area. One of the first explorers to travel through this part of California was Captain John Cranch in 1769. He explored parts of present-day San Diego County and reported back on his findings to President George Washington. In 1854, Congress passed a bill authorizing the construction of a railroad from Sacramento to Coronado. This project would provide access to new markets for goods brought overland from down south. The resulting growth in Coronado led to increased development around the town, which became known as "the Promised Land." The town's importance continued until it was destroyed by fire in 1911.
The history of Coronado, California is filled with stories of adventure and discovery. The area that makes up today’s San Diego County was first populated by Native Americans in the late 1800s, and in 1821, Spanish traders discovered oil reserves in what is now Coronado. The area became a part of Mexico after the Mexican-American War, and the U.S. acquired it as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. The town of Coronado began to grow rapidly during the 1800s as people explored and mined for ore in this new land. By 1900, Coronado had a population of over 100 people and was starting to become known as a center for winegrowing and cattle ranching. In 1903, Baron Von Neuman organized a group of German explorers who charted an route through Central America to find new oil fields on the east coast of Mexico. They named their expedition “Coronados Expedition” after San Diego County (which they had just discovered). In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt issued an Executive Order that made it illegal for American citizens not living within five miles of any military base or naval dockyard to possess firearms. This order caused great tension between American settlers andMexican soldiers stationed near San Diego County. After months of skirmishes, bloodshed, and some key events such as the Battle at Sinaloa River Bridge, tensions calmed down when both sides signed an Agreement establishing boundary lines between their respective countries. After World War II ended, many American servicemen decided to stay in San Diego County while their families returned home to live among their own people again. Many businesses were started here during this time; such as General Electric Company (now Phillips 66), Qualcomm Inc., Boeing Aircraft Corporation (now Delta Airlines), Intel Corp., Ford Motor Company (now Kaiser Permanente), Pathé News Corporation (later Hearst Corporation) – all because these men saw opportunity here in what was once called “the war zone”!

It is without question that Coronado was a pivotal figure in California history. He explored and discovered the San Francisco Bay area in 1769, and within a few years he had founded what would become San Diego. From here he began to build up an empire including ranching, mining, and trade. Coronado also played a critical role in the development of California as an American state; his discoveries and conquests opened up new land for settlement, while his leadership helped to create one of America’s most prosperous regions. In spite of these accomplishments, however, Coronado has often been overshadowed by his contemporaries—most notably Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. Nevertheless, Coronado deserves credit for paving the way for both American expansionism and Californian self-reliance.
On November 8, 1821, Spanish explorer and gold seeker José Coronado discovered the California Gold Rush in what is now San Diego County. The extent of the goldfields that lay beyond the Tejon Mountains was unknown at the time, but by 1830 over $20 million had been invested in prospecting in these hills. The rush began immediately as miners descended on the hillsides for rich bits of coal and silver ore. By 1835 more than 2,000 men had Worked in San Diego County. In 1846 a group of Mormon missionaries arrived in San Diego and soon there were LDS churches all over southern California.
