His business venture allowed him to purchase land east of present day downtown Coronado from Diego Rivera. This new location provided ample opportunity for development as soon as hostilities ceased during World War II. The post-war years saw a number of new businesses open up within Coronado, including hotels, stores, and schools. In 1957, Mayor Arturo Torres y Pacheco establishedCoronado Municipal Airport within the city limits for local use. This opened up additional opportunities for economic growth within the community over the ensuing years. In 1911 Coronado was designated a National Monument by President William Howard Taft before becoming part of Santa Clara County through Proposition 13 referendum; this occurred because many of the buildings which once lined Main Street have been preserved as part of downtown San Jose's Old Town district (the first major development following prohibition). Today Coronado still has a strong presence with many businesses located along its streets including several banks and hospitals situated ondocs Row (Alameda Street between Second Street and Mission Street). The history of Coronado, California is one that spans more than four centuries. The town was founded by the Spaniards in 1769 as part of the Mexican colony of Alta California. From here, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed southward along present-day Long Beach Peninsula until he sighted Mount Carmel on November 9th of that year during his mapping expedition known as La Brea Tar Pits Expedition (1768). At this point he decided to turn back because there were no suitable areas available for colonization in America’s far northwest corner— but he left behind evidence that Americas first European settlement had occurred hereabouts: two small mounds still standing today near Point Conception (now Harbor Beach). In 1821 Mexico ceded Alta California to the United States following their War for Independence against Spain. As a result, much of what is now Los Angeles County belonged within American territory at this time including Rancho Cucamonga which lay just north of downtown Los Angeles proper at then-Point Mugu Naval Station on Point Loma (later renamed Buena Park).
