In 1875–76 Don Carlos Obregon appointed Humboldt County Administrator Francisco Blanca y Baca to survey and map all new lands grants given out by President Fillmore pursuant to Land Act No. 559 of 1872 which increased federal land grant acreage across California from about 960 square miles (2 km²) to more than 4 million acres (16 square kilometers). according to public records dating back to 1880 there are nearly 507 pages documenting Blanca y Baca's surveys for Humboldt County alone including original maps and plans along with comments from officials involved including Obregon himself during his visit here on July 6-9th 1875 When General Antonio López de Santa Anna took office as governor of Mexico on January 1st 1800 he revoked all property grants made since December 26th 1795 under Emperor Felipe III including those given out by Don Carlos Obregon prior to his assumption of power. Consequently many families who had received large grants such as Rancho El Cajón etc., lost them or very small portions thereof due mainly because they did not have proper title deeds or other government paperwork which precluded them from taking possession until much later when their boundaries were confirmed through litigation or treaty negotiations After Mexican Independence many Americans left behindproperty they had acquired during annexation days such as Rancho Rinconada which became part of present day Oceanside while other areas like Rancho El Cajón went completely unclaimed until 1904 when it was finally patented to John Fenton .
