When Juan Bautista Coronado first sighted the Great Valley of California on July 14, 1769, he knew the area could not be ignored. The land was rich in resources and seemed like it would be a perfect place to settle. However, after years of exploration and purchase, Coronado never realized his dream of finding entry into California because no one had yet discovered the interior. However, by 1820, Mexican forces had driven English traders out of what is now San Diego County and by 1821 most of present-day Riverside County was under Mexican control. In 1823, Mexico ceded all or part of California to the United States following its victory in the Mexican-American War. From then until 1850 there was little progress made in exploring or claiming California for the United States because there were few people living in territory that large and without natural resources. But things changed when Andrés Manuel López de Santa Anna took office as president of Mexico in March 1850 and began efforts to reestablish Spanish rule over parts of California. He wanted to open up these areas for U.S settlement so that traditional lands such as Mission Trails could become American possessions. Santa Anna also realized that if he did not claim this land soon enough it would go back into Mexican hands and he wanted to make sure America got a piece of it before that happened. In May 1850 Congress passed an act authorizing President James Kountz to acceptCalifornias admission into the Union as a state but nothing happened until February 27, 1851 when Kountz announced that Californias application had been accepted based on its wealth in natural resources “and especially its warm climate” (Goudreau). This news caused excitement across America because now another country had added territory to their growing empire! Bordering on Oregon were sections of Nevada Territory which became part of Arizona Territory on November 16th, 1912; while regulations about citizenship requirements for residents within each new state led eventually to Proposition 8 (the " gay marriage" amendment) being placed on the ballot in November 2008 which failed with 52% voting against it (Fryer). It's important to keep track of these Changes because they reflect how our country has evolved over time: from colonies looking for opportunity only to becoming an empire with interests stretching beyond our shores!

The Mission San José de Asís was the first European mission in California and is considered to be one of the most important Missions in California history. Mexican settlers arrived later and began to establish villages around Mission San Diego, including Rancho Coronado. The Rancho was part of a larger land grant given to Juan Bautista de Anza by King Carlos III of Spain in 1776. Captain James Cook sailed past San Diego Bay on his famous voyage around Earth in 1779 while exploring south America, and he named the bay "San Diego" after General Don Felipe de Neve y Tavera, Commander-in-Chief of Mexico's Department of Mines and Geology at the time. In 1821, Alvarado grants Rancho Coronado to Major Eduardo Año for his rancho near present-day El Cajon Boulevard and Redondo Beach Boulevard.In 1848, following the Mexican–American War, President Polk issued an executive order creating a new territory called California – comprising all that now makes up Los Angeles County except parts east of Pasadena and west of Anaheim – as part as a result of negotiations between American forces under General John C. Fremont (1811-1895) and Mexican general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (1785-1856). The order also created new national boundaries along the Colorado River system: western Nevada went to American troops; eastern Oregon went to Mexican commandos; central Arizona became part of American territory; and parts northward into British Columbia were assigned to Vancouver Island Territory. Rancho Corona del Cerro was patented by Alvarado on February 15, 1850 from Carlos Menéndez Marcos with reserves for future titles extending down into today's Southern California counties including Riverside County - which would become fully annexed into Los Angeles County when it became a city on December 6, 1915 Today's other portions were added over time including much southern Orange County which would become Riverside County when it became an independent county during 1906 earthquake moratorium called Preference Plan Amendment #1
