Over time, it became known as RanchoCoronado, and later as Mission San Diego de Alcalá. In 1821, Mexican President Agustín de Iturbide designated Rancho Coronado as part of the newly created province of Baja California. In 1823, Mexican soldiers arrived in what is now San Diego to establish a rancho on what is today downtown San Diego. As ranchos were established throughout Baja California, some forces tried to drive the Native Americans out of their land or take away their resources. One such effort began in 1828 when an army led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna attacked Mission San Pedro Misiones on behalf of Governor José Joaquín Burgos. The mission was defended by Native American warriors until they were able to retreated into the hills surrounding the mission. Afterward, General Santa Ana decided against pursuing the attackers and instead abandoned MissionSanPedroMisiones for political reasons.
