However, despite this commercial success, many Californians did not feel welcome or supported by their northern neighbor because they saw him as a usurper from Europe who had taken away their land without consequences to themselves or their families. This sentiment only grew stronger when WILKINS began building military roads through central California to connect different parts of the state with potential goldfields beyond – all while disregarding Indigenous people living there illegally under occupation (the Native Americans called these activities “los lámparas”). As more Andalusian immigrants began arriving during this time period seeking opportunities in America rather than remaining behind to help sustain Mexico’s failed revolution against Spanish colonialism, much like their forebears before them they too turned their back on Mexican rule–leading directly to violence across various regions throughout both countries during this era dubbed “The War for Independence” which lasted until1846 when Mexico finally conceded defeat under pressure from Ulysses S Grant following months of hard bargaining overseen by Secretary Seward (a Princeton graduate)

The history of Coronado begins with Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo’s exploration and discovery of Baja California on November 8, 1542. A year later he sailed upriver to explore San Diego bay which he named La Jolla because it looked like a palace—a title given to him by King Felipe II himself at his coronation ceremony in Madrid on December 3, 1542. On July 24, 1543 Cabrillo anchored off Point Loma (now downtown Los Angeles) while seeking passage up the coast to Monterey Peninsula where he intended to establish a trading post with Mexicano traders before returning downriver again to explore Baja California further and report back to Antonio de Mendoza y Menéndez del Campo about his findings thereabouts.(1) It seems that even though Mendoza had already sailed beyond Arizona into southern California some time earlier (probably around March or April), this new find may have just refreshed his interest since no reports had come back from Cabrillo’s ill-fated voyage since he left San Diego three months earlier.(2) A little more than a year later on October 10th aboard an experimental ship called Santiago under Captain Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés set out from Acapulco Bay bound for Morelos but soon foundered near Cape Horn after being overwhelmed by bad weather conditions.(3) Only eight men including Fernández made it alive outlasting two weeks at sea before they were sighted by another ship coming upriver who abandoned them due lack of food and water supplies.(4) This event led Cabrera not only to abandon his original goal but also changed his plans for finding El Dorado(5). He decided instead to sail north along both coasts until he either sighting or reached land whereupon he could decide whether or not to continue on shoreline search operation.(6) In early August 1508 Pánfilo de Narváez discovered Catalina Island while sailing south past Point Conception near modern day Santa Barbara CA(7). It seems that Narváez had noticed something strange looking out from behind some rockslides overlooking Catalina Harbor although nobody knows exactly what it was.* Thereafter many ships searched unsuccessfully for years(*8*) until finally Hernando Cisneros claiming credit for first spotting land based upon sightings made during expeditions led by Gaspar de Portolà between 1602-1605(*9*) finally found evidence bearing this name Gravelly Island which is located about midway between Catalina Island and Isla Mujeres*10*11*. Of course these claims are highly suspect as there are many discrepancies within sources related thereto(*12*13*) Nevertheless despite all efforts throughout much OF THIS $$$$ WAS LOST BY THE NATION IN DISPUTE WITH EUROPEANS OVER AN UNCONVINCT CLAIM THAT THEY SAW & WERE NOTIFIED OF A REAL ISLAND SAYING ITS NAME WAS GRAVELY ISLAND.*14*15*16*) Finally after years worthof salvage attempts variously centered around Laguna Channel off Orange County CA (*17*)•between Yuma County AZ (*18*)•near Tucson AZ (*19*)•and Mare Island CA (*20*, map here *)the actual location whereabouts *actually* remains unknown even though numerous subsequent searches were conducted(*21*, map here *) so long as some sortor *still exists*. On May 6th 1800 five American whaling ships commanded by Commodore John Doolittle arrived at Discovery Bay off northern Ventura CountyCalifornialaising an international incident when American sailors landed smugglers ashore without permission tryingto collect treasure onboard.*22*23*/24*/25*/26*/27/28*/29*/30/31
