The first settlement in Corona was made by Juan Rodríguez and his family in 1776. The area that is now Corona was first inhabited by the Zuni Indian people. The first white person to live in what is now Corona was José Gomez, who ranched land near the present-day reservoir. In 1853, Antonio Herrera moved from Santa Barbara to become the first postmaster of Corona. By 1865, there were only a few hundred residents living in the town. In 1868, Major General Pio Pico relieved Colonel José Avila of command of California’s volunteer dragoons and ordered them to join Mexican forces besieging Yuma County (now Prescott). Avila decided not to fight against Mexico and returned home, but his unit became guerrilla fighters under Captain Dionisio Castillo. On July 25, 1868, Castillo's unit destroyed a detachment of Ulysses S. Grant's 6th Cavalry at Topo Chico Creek Bridge near present-day Geronimo Lake outside of Corona. This event helped inspire American settlers to settle in this part of California. On November 3rd, 1870 Commodore Perry arrived at Aspinwall on Christmas Day with an army looking for gold that had been discovered at Sutter’s Fort on January 27th 1870. He found no gold but robes and moccasins were taken as booty while three soldiers died trying to access the fortification deep inside Spanish California (present day Baja California Sur). This discovery led many Americans including James Wickersham to travel through Baja California during winter Survey Expedition (1872-1873) looking for any potential goldfields east of Mexicali Bay which he named Wickersham Gold Field after him
