During World War II Corona served as an airfield for American bombers bombing targets throughout Japan
The first European settlers in Corona were Spanish soldiers who arrived in 16 unmarried women and their children on a ship called the San Pasqual in 1768. The men, who were mostly peasants, built small homes and farms near the present-day town of Corona. They named their farm town after the Angel of Deliverance, which they thought would inspire them to be productive farmers. After years of development, Corona was incorporated as a city on February 14, 1892. The city was originally located on the eastern edge of what is now downtown Corona. In 1915, the original municipal building was destroyed by fire and replaced with a new one that still stands today. The city also constructed a water main and sewer system that continues to serve the community to this day. During World War II, Corona served as an important military base for California's Pacific Theater because it was home to Commander Second Fleet Air Station (C2FAS) and Commander Third Fleet Air Station (C3FAS).
