There is no better place to start our knife history than Corona, California. The city was founded in 1853 by Captain John B. Ellis and his wife, Marilla C. Ellis, as a small frontier outpost on the edge of what is now Riverside County. Within a few years the City of Corona had become one of the most important towns in southern California because of its location at the junction of two major wagon roads: the Gold Rush Trail and the Mexican Road. In 1855 Captain Ellis erected a log cabin near today's Civic Center to serve as headquarters for his city council. This new town grew rapidly and within a year had annexed portions of neighboring Riverside County. In 1863, after months of discussion, Mayor James Withers voted to rename Corona "Los Angeles" in honor of King George III of England who had recently been proclaimed Emperor of Mexico City. The growth and development of Los Angeles was only possible due to its strategic location at the heart of Southern California's wine country and agricultural regions. The city became an important manufacturing center during this time with production including cigars, whisky, breadfruit fruit trees and other crops grown near vineyards and markets throughout Orange County and San Bernardino County. The industry declined during World War II but has since resurgence thanks to skilled immigrant labor who have joining them in recent decades. Today, Corona is home to over 3300 residents spread out over six blocks along Main Street between First Avenue (north) and Third Avenue (south). With its vibrant downtown district filled with art galleries, theaters, restaurants and nightlife options both old-fashioned like Second Empire saloons such as Black Jack's or Tom Collins dive bars converted into trendy clubs or extensive renovations done by local architects showcasing traditional Latino craftssmanship it has never lacked for excitement either before or after dark whether hosting events such as market days open air concerts or hosting their own annual holiday festival featuring donuts from different locations around town all weekend long!
