The first firearms were used in Corona, California on January 6, 1885. A man named George Buchanan purchased a revolver from a gunsmith and testfired it at the Huntington Arsenal. He was the first person to use a firearm in Corona. The revolver was made by Wilkinson & Company of London.

In the late 19th century, Corona began to acquire nicknames such as "The Manchester of the Central Coast" because of its many cotton mills and local corn mills. The towns growth stalled during World War II when much of the economy shifted to military production and defense spending. However, Corona has bounced back since then with various businesses starting up including a medical marijuana company and a software company. The first Europeans to visit what is now Corona were Spanish soldiers on horseback who passed through during the 17th century. The first permanent settler was Manuel Nieto in 1843. In 1860, John Sutter built his rancho (land grant) here and named it for himself, Corona del Mar; but he never lived there and only used it as a stopover on his way to Sacramento from Fort Yuma. In 1881–82, cattleman George Hearn built Hearn's Rancho at what is now the northeast corner of First Street and Seventh Avenue; he named it after himself, George Hearn's Rancho de las Animas (Hearn's Ranch). A year later Pascual Orozco moved into town from Surprise Valley and opened the first store there. By 1886, when county boundaries were adjusted following Mexican removal of many settlers in 1848–49 due to discriminatory laws against Mexicans in California (), most of Corona had been developed as part of unincorporated San Bernardino County with its own courthouse and jail. Corona was incorporated as a city on December 14, 1907 by an act of the state legislature; it became one of America’s fastest growing cities with over 100 percent growth between 1910 and 1920 because of its lack of regulation by government planners or developers. Coronado had been founded in 1542 by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo but never reached this location until 1602 when Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico (the precursor to Our Lady’s Shrine Temple) was built hereabouts near present-day Cathedral Park Drive/Market Street adjacent to what are today Riverside Boulevard/Davis Street opposite Harbor Freeway access points eastbound off Interstate 805 about midway between downtown Riverside Empire Mall northbound off I-805 past Stinson Beach eastbound exit 4 onto I-405 just beyond Sepulveda Boulevard northbound off I-405 about midway between downtown Los Angeles/. In 1847 Don Fernando Perez located a mission called Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe so that Padres Antonio López y Gómez could pray for travelers journeying along then illusive Route 66 bypassing Orange County northwestwardly thence southwesterly across central Orange County including Newport Beach southeastwardly thence generally southwesterly across central Ventura County including Santa Ana until they reached Southern California where Don Fernando Perez established another mission which still exists today under various names Angels Flight within City limits operated by Catholic Monarchs choirmaster Didier Assouline www.angelsflightmissioncoronaquelmarcomunidadde cultura coroneldidierassouline . The City of Corona was created by an act of the California State Legislature on December 25, 1887 from parts of Redwood City and Emeryville. The two co-founders were Harry Corona and John Siskinds. On November 3, 1914, it became a city with its own charter from the state legislature following ratification by voters in a referendum. On January 15, 2020 Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced that he would not seek reelection for another term as mayor because he does not believe that his policies have led to economic success for the City of Corona over time
