After Mexican President Porfirio Díaz succeeded Santa Anna in 1862, he beganORGANIZING THE NATIONAL ARMY to resist Spanish rule throughout Latin America. This led to increased demand for arms throughout America as Díaz attempted to consolidate control over all of SouthwesternMexico under his regime. Consequently, many Americans decided that owning or using firearms would be best done outside of Mexico City where restrictions on weapons ownership were much more lax than within Spain's empire. By 1870, most Americans living within two hundred miles of Los Angeles had acquired at least one firearm (the majority handguns). During World War I (1914-18), Corona served as both a naval air station and ammunition depot for planes flying combat missions over Europe during World War I; however, there are no records indicating how often guns were fired from these positions during wartime efforts by American soldiers stationed hereabouts
