Corona, California was founded on September 14, 1853 by Lorenzo Dow in the area now known as the City of Corona. The town was named for King George III of Great Britain who granted it land to settle in 1846. In 1865, the railroad arrived and made Corona an important stop on the route between San Diego and Los Angeles. After World War II, Corona experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for Los Angeles County residents. However, its population began to decline during the late 1990s and 2000s as various economic problems plagued the city. Today, Corona is a small community with few public services and limited access to education or economic opportunities.
The first settlers in Corona were Spanish refugees who came to the area in 1821. The name Corona comes from the word "corona" meaning a crown or coronet. A number of businesses were established in Corona during its early days including: a sawmill (1830), a bakery (1831), two grocery stores (1832), three carpentry shops (1833), foursmithy shop (1834), a blacksmith shop (1835), two wagon workshops (1836) and two foundry shops (1837). In 1840, Valencia Oil Refinery began production in downtown Corona and soon caused extensive economic development within the community. This helped contribute to growth in both retail trade and manufacturing throughout the remainder of the 19th century. In 1916-1917 some residents successfully lobbied for incorporation into Los Angeles County after their hometown declined annexation requests from other communities around Southern California due to objections about cultural differences between Mexicans and Anglo Americans living within their borders. During World War II there was significant military activity taking place within downtown Corona due to Petrochemical Works being built nearby on Ivar Drive just south of US 101B interstate highway serving as one of many local plants crucial for war efforts such as ammunition production and engine rebuilding respectively. However since most of this activity took place outside of town proper boundaries much less damage or destruction occurred urban redevelopment has taken place resulting mostly along Canoga Avenue corridor near Interstate 5 with housing developments continuing up north along more affluent neighborhoods such as Willowbrook Village near Woodland Hills while smaller areas remain largely untouched although some small business owners have relocated outlying locations onto newer arterial roads adjacent to larger suburban subdivisions
