Corona is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Contra Costa County was made by French missionaries in 1776. A smallpox epidemic in 1838 killed most of the Mission Indians, and white settlers soon began to arrive, primarily from Northern California. In 1846, Rancho Rincon de Santa Clara y Buenaventura was granted to José Joaquín De Arguelles and others by Governor Manuel Miranda for the purpose of settling cattle and other minerals on the land. Development of these holdings led to increased immigration from outside California and international trade; water power became an important factor in industry during this time period. In 1851 a group of businessmen led by James Wickersham bought Rancho Rincon de Santa Clara y Buenaventura from Arguelles for $10,000; they named it after General José Joaquín de Alvarado who had fought for Mexico against Great Britain during the Mexican-American War (1848-1912). In 1865 he became president of Mexico and signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican–American War. This event caused great outrage among American Republicans who saw Mexico as their protector under President James Buchanan's administration
