The towns of Corona del Mar and Moraga were part of Rancho San Bernardino Mexican land grant given to José Joaquín Balboa on November 3, 1811. He named it La Paloma because his patron saint was a female mountain lion that roamed near the village of Paloma de la Vega on Elsinore Peninsula. On March 14, 1836, following Mexico's independence from Spain, Coronado claimed Orinda Valley as part of Spanish Empire for himself and renamed it Cerritos; however this claim was never recognized by any other government. In 1848, during Californios' first statehood campaign, they nominated José Moreno as their candidate for governor but he lost to Don Carlos Báez by 316 votes to 272. In 1851–52 Buena Vista Land Grantee Dominguez sold some ranchlands east of present-day Corona to James Hahn for $200 per acre (which would amount to about $ ). The area became known as "Hahn's Hill". In 1863 Hahn donated another piece of property northwest of Yorba Linda to establish the University of Southern California (USC). This donation included an orchard which still remains today used by USC students. In 1865 incorporation rites were performed for what is now Corona; it had a population of just 10 people. On December 12th 1860s two men driving horses got lost while trying to find their way back home from visiting friends in Spring Valley and came across Rancheria San Jacinto where they found water and food supplies storage buildings dating back over 100 years! They named their discovery Rincon de las Aguas Calientes meaning "Ranchment with Warm Water Wells". The men decided to stay there until they could find help finding their way back home so they built a small cabin which still stands today on what is now Rincon de las Aguas Calientes Road west side between Tecate Boulevard and Interstate 56 exit #5A
