Corcoran is a city located in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 41,711 as of the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Diego County after San Diego and it is also home to two universities, UC Riverside and UC Hastings College of the Law. The name "Corcoran" comes from Ohlone words kor-kuh-rae and this derived from an event that took place on October 14, 1769 when Captain James Cook discovered land at what is now known as Point Loma. Because of its location on one of the most important shipping routes between Asia and America, Corcoran quickly became a trading post for goods moving westwards across the continent. In 1821, Don Miguel Cámpora purchased about 6 square miles (15 km2) east of Corcoran from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $1,000USD. This purchase included a millstream called la Laguna which ran through present day downtown Corcoran. The first white settler in what would become Corcoran was José Gomez who arrived in 1825 with his family from Mission Viejo de las Palmas de Granada y Progreso ( Alvord’s Ranch). In 1827 Lorenzo Sanchez purchased about 3/4 mile (1 km) south of today’s corner store on Center Street from José Gomez for $10USD per acre (0 hectares). From 1840 to 1850 there were only six families living in downtown Corcoran; by 1860 there were over 100 families living there including many Irish Catholics who had come to work on irrigation projects around Point Loma. The railroads arrived during this time and began providing transportation for people and goods alike; by 1870 businesses along Center Street had disappeared completely because so much traffic passed through downtown on Calle Real freight trains running east-west or north-south. By 1880 cornered development had caused streets near Centre Street to be renamed following business districts such as Highways 66a & 66b - these days part of University Avenue South In 1892Mayor Manuel Soto convened a meeting held at City Hall to discuss how best to handle growing numbers of Italian immigrants who were coming into town looking for work in agriculture or tradepositions during an economic depression which was hitting all parts of California at that time. After careful consideration Mayor Soto recommended that cornered development be allowed within City limits but warned against any further growth until more suitable housing could be available . After years deliberations city officials voted 5-2 on November 12th 1893 to annex additional land extending northeastward past present day University Avenue South into what would become known as “the Heights” – making thenCorporon into one large municipality with its own government and school system! At this point many Italians began leaving town because they no longer wanted their homes taken away while others welcomed annexation because it gave them some say in policy although they continue live primarily withinCorporon today As new subdivisions are developed throughout DowntownCorporon continues to grow faster than ever before!
