George Washington Corcoran and his family immigrated to California in 1847. George was a surveyor and, after a few years of work, became interested in the Gold Rush. He joined others in starting a gold mine near San Francisco. After his release he returned to California and took up land ownership near Sacramento. In 1872 he married Anna Alida Kearney; they had three children: Mary Louise (1873-1951), John Quincy Adams (1875-1963) and Eleanor Roosevelt (1913-2008). George Corcoran served as mayor of Sacramento from 1906 to 1912, state senator from 1922 to 1928 and again from 1932 until his death at age 89 on December 16, 1936. As mayor he helped found The City Club of Sacramento and is credited with being one of the first public officials in Sacramento who promoted high quality public education through city government rather than through private schools. From 1934 until his death he also served as president pro tempore of the State Senate. After George Corcoran's death, Catharine Harry Truman succeeded him as president pro tempore of the State Senate but did not serve long because she died on August 9th 1948 just four days after taking office. On January 3rd 1959 Nancy Reagan became president pro tempore; her term expired on July 14th 1959 so that she could be succeeded by fellow Californian Dwight Eisenhower who would continue this tradition until 1995 when it was replaced by Sonny Bono who also served two terms before leaving office on January 6th 2001 having been impeached twice during his time as President “for cause” - once over charges related to campaign finance reform legislation which failed but once for making sexual advances towards women while serving as Chairman of their Presidential Advisory Committee on Sex Abuse].
