Corcoran is a small town in the eastern San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the east side of the Hollywood Freeway and has a population of about 12,000 people. The name comes from Spanish correo, meaning "post." The first Europeans to visit Corcoran were Franciscans who arrived in 1769. In 1824, José Miguel Corona y Vargas founded the Mission Santa Cruz de la Vera Cruz del Vallejo nearby. After Mexican independence was declared in 1821, many former Mexican citizens fled to Corcoran and other parts of southeastern Los Angeles County. A large influx of Anglo Americans followed in 1853 when gold was discovered at Sespe Creek near Lomita. Mining operations began here soon after and new settlers arrived throughout the 1850s until 1955 when mostmining stopped due to subsidence and environmental objections from local residents. In 1957, plans were made for a movie studio at what is now called Universal Studios Park; however, those plans were never realized because of opposition from local residents who saw the studio as an eyesore on their townscape. Instead, Universal Pictures built their own studios nearby which continue to be used today. A significant event in Corcoran's history occurred on October 26th 1944 when Japanese forces attacked our town during World War II with devastating results; more than 60% of our buildings were destroyed or damaged including my school which still stands today (it was rebuilt following that attack).Following that Attack many businesses closed down along with much social activity as everyone tried to rebuild post-war life within their community.....This period can best be described as reconstruction time as there wasn't really anything going on aside from making do without things like transportation or shopping opportunities.........However things did start moving again shortly after thanks to some very brave individuals who contributed materials/time/energy etc...... these people are generally recognized as being such pioneers within our community named Bob Hope (the late Mr.) John Lennon (the current Mayor), Yoko Ono (later Mrs.), Garry Marshall(the founder/owner of La Brea Tar Pits) among others....... however there are countless others that have also helped makeCorcoran one of the most active small towns in all of Southern California...........today it still struggles somewhat with its infrastructure but it definitely has come a long way considering all that has happened over the years;;;
Cordcoran was founded in 1876 by N. Eugene Corcoran and his wife, Emma. The town was named after the Cordillera mountain range which is located in California. The first store in Cordcoran opened its doors in 1878. By 1893, there were five stores in the town and a post office operated from 1889 to 1902. In 1916, the Cordcoran school district was formed and the first school opened in 1918. In 1945, the town became a city and it has since grown significantly with an population of over 60,000 residents today.
