Nieto may also have been influenced by Captain Kidd's exploits off Jamaica two years earlier when he raided Spanish ships anchored at Guanajuato Bay before sailing south along today's coastlines Elkhorn Reefs towards Los Angeles Harbor where he plundered several vessels before being captured by Spanish authorities on shore at Monterrey Bay about 2 miles east southeast of Point Mugueron currently known as Pompano Beach across from Naval Air Station Key West where Iwo Jima used to be located prior to its capture by Japan during World War II as well as various airfields such as Camp Kearny still extant on Okinawa today following World War II although not actually within Okinawa Prefecture proper! The first European settlement in what is now Corona occurred around 1800 when French fur hunters came ashore seeking animal supplies near present day Avalon beach on Catalina island which they renamed Rancho de las Pulgas (Laguna Ranch). This early settlement would remain a small community until 1836 when José Antonio Ortega y Gasset took possession from Fernando Ortiz/Pardo/Garza who had sold him land grant extending eastward from Mission San Gabriel Arcángel approximately 6 miles north northeast cornering present day Old Town Corona close to where Bolsa Street meets Broadway today.
