James W Snively was an American politician who represented California’s 1st congressional district (1925-1929) and later became mayor of Stockton (1916-22). He was also a member of both the United States Senate (1923-33) and House of Representatives (1945-49).

During the 1860s, gold seekers started arriving in San Fernando Valley from all over California looking for the valuable mineral deposits that would later make Corcoran so prosperous. Some of these miners became very successful and built quite a following in the town. Among these men was James Waddell, who began trading goods with Mexico City and eventually made himself very wealthy by buying silver mines there. By 1870, Corcoran had reached its peak as a commercial center for the San Fernando Valley area. It had several large hotels and businesses such as Mr. Smith's grocery store, Gilette's clothing store, Gold Rush Brewery (later renamed Pacific Brewing Company), Mrs. Lathrop's bakery/cafeteria/lunchroom, Jardine & Hastings dry goods store (founded by Captain James Jardine), Masonic Temple No 2 (opened in 1875), Waddell Drug Store (opened 1865), Northern Pacific Railroad depot (opened 1883) – all of which are still standing today!
The town of Corcoran, California was founded in 1853 by James Fenton. The town gradually grew and prospered until the 1870s when it became a railroad junction. In the 1880s, the town developed into a small agricultural community with few industry options. By the end of the 19th century, Corcoran had become a small rural community with few amenities for its residents. The population peaked at around 3,000 in 1920 but declined to 2,500 by 1960.
