The population was 165 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Corcoran were Spanish missionaries in 1769. In 1821, Rancho Corcoran was granted to James Irvine by Governor Manuel Micheltorena for his part in helping lead a pro- Californian insurgency against Mexico. Captain John Copley surveyed this tract of land on November 11, 1826 while en route from San Francisco back home to Sacramento with supplies for General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna’s army besieging Yuma River garrisoned by Mexican troops under José Joaquín Gómez y Costilla. On December 12th, 1826 Captains Copley and Andrew Hume discovered oil wells near present day Chevron Station on Highway 1 about 5 miles north of town center on Doña Ana County Road 168 (now Peralta Freeway). This discovery gave rise to local legend that “the Well of thousand wells” was found thereabouts but this story may be apocryphal. Gómez y Costilla abandoned his garrison at Yuma and departed for Chihuahua without attacking Chihuahua City when news reached him of potential American oil discoveries at Bakersfield in 1827; he decided instead to march all the way down into Mexico City seeking reinforcements before proceeding any further down river. A few days later Captain Copley sighted an immense federal force consisting of over 100 cannons moving towards them from Monterrey across Pueblo Pass just beyond today’s downtown intersection of I-5 and US 101 (modern day mile marker 16). He signaled his men not fire until ordered otherwise as he knew they would soon be destroyed or captured if attacked by such a large force armed only with pistols! The town's growth continued through the years and by 1840 it had reached its peak with 24,593 residents. However, the town began to decline after 1840 as manufacturing jobs left for other areas of California. In 1848 Corcoran joined the new state of California and was formally incorporated as a city. The population of Corcoran declined again until it peaked at 27,531 in 1960 before declining again over the next few decades. As of 2010, only 801 people live inCorcoran today
