A wharf was built near wherepresent-day Civic Center sits to accommodate boats carrying goods between Vallejo and Sacramento; the first steamer service arrived here in 1857 In 1863, during Confederate occupation of Northern California, American soldiers burned down Mexican Mission San Jose de los Arroyos y la Concepción for refusing to take sides against slavery.
