Concord, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California. It lies on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay and was founded in 1853 by American settlers. The city has a population of 122,376 as of 2017. Concord's history dates back to 1853 when American settlers arrived in what is now Contra Costa County. They named the area after their home town of Concord, Massachusetts. A post office was established in Concord on December 5, 1855, and the first store was built on July 20,1857. The first school was opened in Concord on September 12, 1861. In 1870, the first train reached Concord from San Francisco and it took fifteen minutes to travel one mile (1 km). The railroads helped create economic opportunities for people living in Concord and other surrounding communities during the early days of America’s railroad industry. By 1888 there were ten stores in town and eight restaurants serving food to residents. In 1902 a bridge was constructed over Raccoon Creek which connected downtown with rural areas east of town. This bridge allowed easier access for farmers to get supplies needed for their crops into downtown Concord and also increased commerce between downtown and rural areas. In 1906 a new high school building was erected east of town at what is now known as Donahue Boulevard; this building became known as “The School House” after its architect – John Witherspoon Donahue – who served as superintendent from 1915-1916 and 1923-1924. The City Manager Office moved from its original location at 142 Elm Street to its current location at 425 Soquel Avenue in 1967 when City Hall moved from Its original location next door at 123 Elm Street because that space had been dedicated to the Recreation Department since 1922 When City Manager Tom Doherty left office he leased 425 Soquel Avenue to the Town of Antioch which then used it as its ownCity Hall until 2000 When City Hall relocated back to its oldlocation next door at 123 ElmStreet again due to lack of available parking spaces they vacated 425SoquelAvenueand transferred ownershiptotheTownofAntiochwhichthenuseditasitsowncityhalluntil2000 In 1948 an ordinance called "An Act To Regulate Firearms"waspassedbyConcord voters which regulated arms dealers within city limits with specific regulations including: no sales or possession without prior written consent fromFirearms Dealers Board; no sale or delivery within one hundred fifty feet (46 m)Of any public place where firearms may be sold; no showing gun unless accompanied by someone 21 years old or older who has proof Of Age; use only self-defense weapons such as pistols not larger than .45 caliber; Keep records Of all transactions involving handguns
