Concord, California is a town in Contra Costa County, California. It was incorporated on November 6, 1859 and became a city on December 15, 1906. The population was 82,471 at the 2010 census. Concord is located at (37.464431 -122.326553). The first Europeans to visit Concord were the Spanish in 1810 when they made landfall on what is now the east coast of Santa Cruz Island near today's intersection of Highway 101 and Middle Road. A smallpox epidemic that year killed many of these visitors and their families. In 1821–22 another Spanish expedition discovered gold and silver mines in what is now part of Concord Township but no settlement resulted because there were few people who wanted to move to an area with so much treasure potential. In 1865, William Fenton purchased 640 acres (253 ha) north of present-day Concord for $1 million from David Sanger and others who had lost land in the San Francisco Gold Rush. This land became known as "Fenton Ranch". The town site was selected for its location by Vail & Moffat engineers working on a new routing for Interstate 80 which would connect San Francisco to Los Angeles through Contra Costa County. In 1896, Fenton donated 1/2 acre (0·6 ha) of his ranch to each family living in Concord as part of a land grant given him during the days when Rancho Santiago de Atascadero lay within Contra Costa County limits rather than within San Francisco proper. The grant system continued until 1911 when all remaining grants were sold off to make way for other development projects such as Interstate 80 and Highways 680 and 680A. The first post office opened in Concord on October 14, 1861; it remained open until it closed on May 12, 1924 due totown growth over time which exceeded the available postal services handled by the original Post Office Building on Second Street between Highways 101st Avenue and 102nd Avenue South: only mail sent from inside or outside Contra Costa County could be delivered here at that time! MILITARY SERVICE AND THE FIRST REGIONAL AIRPORT Concord Airport opened March 17th 1945 with military aircraft operations beginning two weeks later including RAF Lancaster bombers dropping goods into Bay City before returning home refueling at Half Moon Bay Naval Air Station
