Concord, California is a city of over 150,000 people located in Contra Costa County, California. The history of Concord begins with its incorporation as a town on July 14, 1853. One of the first things that Concord did was to build a jail to hold criminals awaiting trial. This jail still stands today and is used as part of the City Hall complex. In 1865, Concord became an experimental county seat for Contra Costa County when it was created from parts of Alameda and Marin Counties. In 1868, voters approved Measure V which provided for an annual income tax to be levied on properties within the new county limits (the equivalent of $2 per capita). Concord is located on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley and is bordered by Bakersfield to the north and east, Tulare to the south-southwest, and Arroyo Grande to the west. In 1865–1866 Concord become part of Nevada Territory; after that it reverted back to Kern County jurisdiction. In 1893–1894 two large wildfires destroyed most of downtown Concord; however firefighters managed to save many buildings including The State Capitol building which still stands today as one of Concords landmarks On July 30th 1903 fire burned down much of Convent leaving no physical evidence but duellist scars remain visible all around downtown area
