Concord, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It population was 77,521 at the 2010 census. The city was founded on December 4, 1856 by John C. Fremont and his wife Josie as an agricultural community named Concordia. It became a town on December 12 of that year when the first post office was established there. The first permanent settler in Concord was George Washington Smith who bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of land from James Irvine for $491 on November 6, 1857. He built the first house in Concord on what is now First Street and Main Avenue. In 1865, G W Smith's son-in-law Hiram Sibley organized a group of farmers to purchase 1,500 acres (700 hectares) of land east of Concord for $10 per acre ($2 per hectare). This area became known as Rancho San Rafael del Norte and served as the nucleus around which many later American towns were founded
On December 14, 1846, the first post office in Concord was established. The post office name was changed to Concord on May 15, 1851. In 1865, the town of Concord merged with the city of San Francisco.
