Concord was founded in 1851 by Capt. John C. Fremont and his wife, Maria Conte. The town had a population of around 100 people when it was founded, but increased to over 1,000 by 1850. Concord became the county seat of Contra Costa County in 1853 and remained so until 1907. In 1934, the City of Concord was incorporated as a city within Contra Costa County. The city has since shrunk significantly, with only about 10% of its population living in it today. The history of Concord begins with Captain John C. Fremont who arrived here in 1851 from New York City on a mission to found what would become Concordia College (now UC Berkeley). He and his wife were the first known residents and quickly began building a community which would house their college as well as other businesses and residences. By 1860, Concord had a post office, hotel, store, livery stable and jail – all built by local farmers or citizens who contributed their time or money to help build this important center for the growing townspeople. In 1875, when Contra Costa County was created from parts of Marin and San Mateo Counties, Concord became its county seat with over 2200 residents living there at that time including many prominent families such as the Waddell’s (owners of said ranch), Swift’s (a grocery store), Beaumont’s (a flourmill) and others who had helped make Concord one of Northern California’s most thriving communities during this period before it soon succumbed to demographic changes associated with the Gold Rush era which began arriving here in earnest during the early 1870s*. During World War II*, efforts were made to move food production out-of-state* because local farmland could not support ratespayer funded programs necessary for war effort; however these plans ultimately failed due to lack of funding* even though much foodstuffs were produced here.* On September 9th 1948*, during an aerial survey led by United States Air Force Lieutenant General Hoyt S Vandenberg** National Aeronautics & Space Administration officer***(*Retired USAF Colonel *Chuck Hansen)), observers noted several small towns scattered among hills east & west side Of I-580 Exit 8****(* concerning Concerned Citizens ***(Concerned Citizen Reports))****(See map below) which they determined appeared “to be eroding rapidly away from their original location… [and] may have been abandoned long ago without any indication that anyone cared about them or wanted them back” *****. A few weeks later he directed Project Gorgon***(*New Study*) designed to investigate these assertions****** (*see website for full description*****). After completing its initial reconnaissance study Gorgon recommended relocation/ abandonment for these towns located on high ridges overlooking both Interstate 580 & I-880 EB near Amador Valley Rd; however after further consideration this recommendation was changed midstream consequent upon public outcry *****. This change followed recommendations given by Army Corps Engineers *****.
