Concord, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 89,871 at the 2010 census. Concord was founded in 1853 by United States surveyors and settlers as a small ranch town on the banks of the San Francisco Bay. The name "Concord" comes from the word for "peace" or "calm." The site of Concord had been under consideration for settlement since 1795 when Jedediah Smith mapped out what would become Contra Costa County. In 1846, when American expansion reached Rancho Rincon de las Pulgas in present-day Pleasanton, John Sutter began to build his new ranch there and named it after his birthplace of Concord, Massachusetts. When he died in 1850, his holdings passed to his son Sam Leland Sutter and their heirs who continued to develop the land around Concord until 1907 when they donated it to the City of Concord. The first post office at Concord opened on December 5, 1853. At its peak during the 1850s, Concord had a population of around 100 people; however, this number decreased rapidly due to immigration and other factors. By 1870 only 10 residents remained in town while most of the buildings were destroyed by fire that year. With an increasing demand for housing near downtown San Francisco during World War II (1941–1945), much development took place outside of town between 1945 and 1951 including: hospitals (University Hospital 1941-1949; Veterans Affairs Medical Center 1951-1957); military barracks 1943-1945 (Fort Bragg Barracks 1957-1960); Lane Air Force Base 1949-1959; Donnybrook Place 1959-. Many current structures built after 1951 were not built until after 2000 such as: Northgate Mall 1966-. A crime wave that started in 1993 following several unsolved homicides led to increased police activity and infrastructure investment beginning with Measure B which amended city charter effective January 1st 1995 which provided funding for Police Services Unit 2 forming part of Mayor Willie Brown's Strategic Plan To Build Better communities
In 1850, Concord was the location of the first organized Methodist church in California. In 1872, it became the location of the State Capitol. The Concord Hotel was built in 1907 and is still one of the most popular tourist destinations in town.
