After a few days' exploration they decided against furthering their explorations and returned back out to sea; however, they left behind them two smallpox-infected animals which spread the disease among the native Ohlone people before finally disappearing from history entirely some 25 years later when Captain James Cook visited England via Cape Horn during his circumnavigation of Earth (1768-1770). The first known reference to this area being called “Concord” comes from an early map prepared by Lt.(jg.)
