Concord, California is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 33,844 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Contra Costa County were Spanish missionaries who founded Missions San Francisco de Asis and San José Arcángel in 1817 and 1818 respectively. In 1853, a Zen Buddhist monk named Daisaku Ikeda moved from Japan to Ukiah to start a new school. He appointed John Atherton as superintendent of schools for the county and recommended that Concord be made the primary seat of government for the western half of the county (north of Antioch). The city of Ukiah opposed this recommendation because it wanted its own city hall; when Atherton died in 1857, however, Ukiah ceded control of Concord to Concord. In 1865, two years after his appointment as sheriff by Governor Hiram Johnson, William Halleck became interested in land east of Antioch which he thought would be suitable for farming because it had been drained and improved by earlier settlers. He offered $10 per acre for any land over an mile square that could be claimed within 10 miles (16 km) of Antioch without giving away any title or possession. This offer was accepted by various farmers and merchants who formed what became known as "Halleck's Committee". They traveled through the area claiming property until they found enough valid claims toorganized themselves into a township on January 1st, 1870 under the name "Concord Township". On July 25th 1909 Concord incorporation was granted by Governor George Waddell with assistance from Mayor Charles Fenton On December 5th 1912 Union Pacific Railroad laid track between Antioch and Walnut Creek along present day Highway 24
