When first settled by Europeans in the 1790s, Concord was known as Arenalillo and lay within present-day Tulare County and Kern County. In 1881, settlers founded the city on land that had been donated by Major General Antonio Regnoli. The name comes from a Native American word meaning "place where trees grow." In 1916, Mayor John Wickersham designated Concord as the official seat of Tulare County after proclaiming it an important center for education and culture throughout central California. By 1920, there were over 50 churches in Concord with over 100 ministers serving each one. In 1970, when Measure B was passed to annex most of Kern County into California, Concord became part of Alameda County (the largest county in California). Today, downtown Concord is home to several large shopping malls including One Commerce Center and mallards near the train station provide excellent views of the downtown skyline from all levels inside or outside retailers stores
