In 1871, when white entrepreneurs organized what would become known as the Pueblo Land Company to purchase Rancho La Brea from Manuel Nieto and other Mexican ranchers, they were looking for land where they could build mills and plantations. They found what they were looking for – piecemeal grants totaling 6 square miles (15 km2) east of downtown Compton – and sold it to prospectors including John Sutter in 1872. With cotton prices high after being freed from slavery in 1865, many whites decided to settle down on these new estates within minutes of arriving on horseback or wagon trains laden with bales of raw cotton awaiting processing into sacks or clothing size XXL which then could be exported all over the world! The initial settlers faced several challenges: lack of water resources; hostile Native American tribes who raided ranches and homes; winters that lasted months without any measurable rainfall; difficult terrain that made roads impassable without horses or carts; and floods that destroyed crops and homes during winter storms). However, through hard work, perseverance and cooperation these first Anglo-Mexican settlers built a strong community which soon grew into one of Southern California’s most prominent farming communities with its own school system (the first public school opened in 1878), churches (including one Baptist church established in 1881), newspapers (the first paper published west of Arizona), post office (opened December 4th 1870), businesses (such as smelters) and – most importantly – enslaved Africans who worked on family farmssteading until emancipation in 1865 brought an end to their bondage
