Mines continued being productive until about 1860 when production ceased because new methods were developed for extracting metal from ore including cyanide poisoning which made mining very dangerous In 1892 John Sutter arrived from Nevada with his family following an ad placed in the Los Angeles Times announcing a $10 per acre offer for lands east of Orange County called Sutter Springs Ranch which he claimed extending upriver as far as Tustin Creek lay virgin soil offering irrigation potential not yet touched by man so valuable it could be used only for fruit trees not cattlerich property Transportation proved difficult due to rugged geography so Sutter organized teams through friends and fellow miners traveling on stagecoaches over harsh terrain finally reaching their destination where they began building log cabins village sprang up around these structures gradually becoming more than just a place to sleep overnight carpenters built churches schools hospitals clinics etc
