Compton, California was founded in 1847 by Captain John Sutter and his brother-in-law, David Dixon. The site of present day Compton was a small valley between the San Gabriel Mountains and Los Angeles River. It was named for General Antonio José de la Costa y Mendoza who had explored the area in 1836. The first post office at Compton was established on March 17, 1848. A hotel called the Adelphi was built in 1854 and later became known as the Paramount Hotel. In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer and his regiment of cavalry were marching from Pasadena to Anaheim when they came across the tracks of the Central Pacific Railroad near what is now Compton Hills. After horses got lost in a sandbank, Custer's column went off into a wooded ravine to find them; he never returned to Soldiers' Fort. The town of Compton began to grow rapidly after gold discoveries were made there in 1850 by Don Carlos De Anza and others working for Mexican American War captain Juan Bautista Alvarado during their drive southward through central California during that conflict. Gold seekers abandoned everything they had not taken with them when they struck it richs digging Consolidated Mines claims on November 21, 1850 but prospectors soon followed suit finding more than $1 million worth of gold sands over four years while placer mining continued intermittently until 1862 when disagreements between owner/miners led to violence which eventually produced what is now known as Fresno County Sheriff's Department Records # EL 6046 which lists John Sutter (Captain) & David Dixon as proprietors or operators thereof October 20th 1861 In1872 an Act of Congress provided for subdivision of Colusa County into two parts - one east of Tubbs Creek including present day Compton and Yorba Linda villages (now part of Orange County), under direction of United States Surveyor General James Hahn; part west including all that now forms Yorba Linda Village excepting portions lying within Orange County line including present day Yorba Linda Heights where Captains Dixon & Sutter erected their house early this year Wm Hutton Maynard
