It is the most populous city in south-central Los Angeles and one of the largest cities in Orange County. Compton's history began with ranching, logging, and farming on what is now known as Rancho Niguel. In 1881, John Sutter leased 640 acres (250 ha) of land near present-day Compton to George Seabrook for $10 per acre ($1 million at current prices). In 1887, General Julius Evans founded the United States Military Academy at West Point in New York City; Compton was selected as its site. The completion of West Point made it possible for American servicemen from nearby communities to attend military school without leaving their homes. In 1870s and 1880s several other citrus towns were established throughout Southern California by entrepreneurs including Pio Pico in San Marino and James Wolkentin in Lancaster; these towns became independent cities when they were annexed into Los Angeles County or when their citizens voted to become part of what would become Compton. A few years later Hollywood began production on films using Western Movie Stars such as Douglas Fairbanks Sr., Charlie Chaplin, Keystone Cops and many more that set the stage for various businesses being established around town like Sam Walton's Walmart Supercenter which remains today one of downtown’s leading attractions

Compton, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 118,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of both San Fernando and Ventura Counties. The name of Compton may come from a Mexican settlement called Comancheros which was established along the Santa Monica Peninsula in 1847. Compton's economy depends on its location near Hollywood and Universal Studios as well as its service to nearby communities such as Signal Hill and Monrovia. The first business in what is now Compton was a post office called Ahwahnee but it closed in 1873 because of Indian attacks. A store opened on May 8, 1888 by J. P. Morgan named after his father-in-law Joshua Norton who had founded the Bank of America at Beverly Hills two years earlier. In 1893, gold was discovered in what is now Huntington Park and soon thereafter businesses began to spring up around this new groundzero for mining activity with names like Gold King Mines, Queen (later placer) mines and Consolidated Mining Company Ltd.. By 1898 there were over 20 businesses operating out of what became known as “the Gould Place” complex including 12 banks, six hotels, three general stores and four grocery stores according to one source On October 15th 1886 an earthquake struck off the coast of Southern California killing more than 100 people due to landslides that occurred during the quake which also destroyed many homes nearby The Great American Eclipse of August 29th 1906 made things even worse when totality hit almost directly across town from where our current skyline stands One report has it that damage done during 1906 Earthquake totaled over $2 million dollars which equalized to about 25% or 2 percent of Gross National Product at that time (although losses are still felt today by local businesses impacted by disasters like hurricanes or earthquakes) . Aftermath resulted in much rebuilding with new land being developed specifically for housing developments such as Carson-Hills Estates and Montebello Gardens while other areas saw some commercial development such as Wilmington Village east of I-405
Compton was founded in 1871 by the brothers Jesse and Solomon Compton. The Comptons were missionaries who came to California from Illinois to start a Christian mission. They purchased 100 acres of land in what is now Compton and began building a home on it. In 1875, they had their first child, named after them, Jesse Compton Jr
