CLAI eventually evolved into National Rifle Association (NRA) affiliate Compton Gun Club (CGC), which continues operations today at its former location on Hyperion Avenue just east of I-5 freeway exit 221A. Compton, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 86,597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Westside neighborhood of Los Angeles. In recent years however, Compton has seen some resurgence development as a center for African American culture and education as well as increasing emphasis on business and industry opportunities within its boundaries

In 1847, the city of Compton was founded on the banks of the San Gabriel River by James Marshall and his brother John in what is now Lynwood. The area around Compton was mostly rural with some scattered Native American settlements. The first known census in this area was taken in 1851. That year, Compton had a population of just over 100 people. By 1860, it had grown to 478 people. In 1871, Compton became part of Los Angeles County when it was created from parts of California's Central Valley. The city's growth continued into the 1920s and 1930s as a result of its location on the Hollywood Freeway and its access to other major metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. However, during World War II, Compton became a target for Japanese-American internment because its residents were suspected of being potential spies or collaborators with Axis forces. As a result, most African Americans left Compton between 1940 and 1945; only a small number remain today. However, while many African Americans left during World War II, they never completely lost touch with their culture or history; many black businesses still operate in Compton today. The largest African American cultural institution still located within Compton is Ghetto Gallery which opened its doors in 1969 as an art gallery specifically for Black artists who could not typically find space within larger galleries across Southern California at that time.
