In 1927, Paramount Pictures built their first soundstage west of Hollywood at 15th Street and Park Avenue; it would become their main production studios until Paramount closed them down in 1985. Paramount also built a large building called "The Ghetto" on West Adams Boulevard near Central Avenue (now called Roosevelt Blvd.) where they filmed black American movies from 1942 to 1949 including "I Spy". In 1951, Don Freeman purchased 2 square blocks between North Broadway Boulevard and East 122nd Street from Harry Cohn for $1 million dollars which would later be renamed Renaissance Square after then-Mayor Tom Bradley's bid for City Hall renovation project funding In 1957,GEICO acquired Unterberger-Werner AG from Samuel Unterberger who had earlier founded GEICO Corporation (later General Electric). Don Freeman renamed this company Renaissance Square Incorporated with headquarters located at 1070 W Olympic Blvd., Suite 210 which remains today one of the most important business addresses within Downtown LA despite Gibson Center moving into its current location across Santa Monica Boulevard just southwest adjacent to UCLA campus during late 1990s when that portion of town was annexed by UCLA under new UCLA-LAC boundary

Today, Compton is home to several high-tech companies as well as numerous small businesses whose products contribute significantly to Southern California's economy.
