Compton is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 82,521 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the South Bay region and shares borders with Bellflower, Hermosa Beach and Pico Rivera. Compton has a Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps. The first Europeans to visit Compton were the Spanish Missionaries in 1771. The original name of Compton was San Pablo de los Angeles which means "St Peter's Presbyterian Church". In 1847, when Alameda County was created from parts of Los Angeles County, Compton became part of that new county. The citizens of Compton voted to change their name to Compton in honor of General John Sutter who had fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War and had brought over large amounts of silverware back to America. At first it seemed like this naming decision would not be honored as General Sutter's remains lay buried in Monterey Park Cemetery nearby but eventually they moved his body to rest there after many years being denied access. After several unsuccessful attempts by members of the City Council to rename the city after General Sutter, he finally received a state funeral at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on October 15th 1904. The early days for Compton were difficult because there was no water available and people had to walk long distances for drinking or washing clothes because there wasn't any place else to do so. However, through hard work and determination these days are looking much better for Compton residents with some great accomplishments such as: There have been numerous advances made within the city since it achieved its current level of prosperity including: - The opening up of new businesses that have seen success such as Staples Center (January 1st 2006), Home Depot (December 12th 2009), Charter Communications (March 3rd 2013) and many more; - An increase in home prices that has seen homes worth $200 million or more becoming available; - A renaissance within music industry where major acts like Eminem and Dr Dre have All Access passes now available for purchase allowing fans easy access backstage; - Many successful African American mayors who have led their cities into new levels OF progress

The first settlement in what is now Compton was made up of people from English colonies who had come overland from Barbados and Madeira. The first white person to live here was Capt. James Cook, who landed on October 14, 1778 with his ship HMS "Dolphin." He and his men were part of a group that explored California for Spain when they sighted this area on September 8th, 1779. No one knows for sure how many people lived in this area before 1872 when gold began being found here by prospectors known as "the Comstock Leads." In 1871, John Sutter founded the town of Sutterville which was located east of Compton on Ife Road (now Utopia Parkway). The town served as a convenient transportation point because it connected Mono Lake with Sacramento Valley via wagon road. As early as 1873 there were several businesses open in Sutterville including a hotel, bakery and millinery shop. After gold was discovered at Sutterville in 1874 several other towns started to form near it including Arroyo Seco which became an important railroad junction; Alhambra; Whittier; and finally Compton where James Wickersham built Wickersham's Store which became one of the first stores in Southern California
Compton was founded in 1847 as a small mission town on the banks of the San Gabriel River. The town was named after General James Orr Compton, an American general who had led a military expedition against Mexican forces at the Battle of Buena Vista in 1846. The first store opened in December of that year. In 1850, Compton became an independent city and continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1910. It is now a bedroom community located within Los Angeles County.
