Compton, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. Compton is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States. The city has a rich history and is known for its music industry, nightlife, and Hispanic culture. The area now known as Compton was first inhabited by the Tongva people. It was part of Rancho San Pedro de la Guadalupe Mexican land grant given to José María Obregon in 1821. In 1848, during the Mexican–American War, Compton was taken by Ulysses S. Grant as part of Mexico's New Mexico Territory after it had been captured by General Antonio López de Santa Anna from General Carlos Mesa's army near Nogales on February 15th of that year. In 1849, following his victory over Santa Anna at Buena Vista Hill and Alamo Heights (now Boyle Heights), Ulysses S. Grant moved Californios into what is now Compton from Mission Viejo and other portions of Southern California under the new "Allotment Act". On October 14th 1850 gold was discovered in La Honda Canyon next to present-day Pena Blanca Creek in what is now Highland Park; however this claim too was only partialized with discoveries being made further east acrossLOS ANGELES COUNTY The first post office called "Compton" opened on December 3rd 1865; it closed on July 12th 1870 due to population growth within then existing incorporated cities such as South Pasadena and Eagle Rock which predate Compton's incorporation date by several years. The name "Compton" originated with William Haskins who purchased land north ofpresent day Highland Park from Captain John Cudahy in 1863 for $5 per acre ($136/acre today). A Mr Haskins built a ranch house on what would become Main Street near Ohlone Village until 1865 when he sold property eastward to Wm Haskins & Son gristmill owners Philip & Mary Hearnbaugh who laid out present day Hearnbaugh Gardens between 1860-1863 which became home to their children before they sold most of it off to various developers throughout the late 1800s including William Mulholland Sr., later developer of Laurel Canyon Boulevard circa 1912-1920 In 1881 constable Hiram Peebles received complaints about counterfeiters operating around town so he organized an expedition led by Lieutenant George Armstrong Richardson against these thieves using dogs while also arresting some local criminals; this operation became known as Rodeo Days which originally took place January 6th through 10th each year along Lankershim Boulevard west of downtownLos Angeles By 1890 there were six stores located along three blocks: North First Street between West 16th Avenue and East 17th Avenue; South Second Street between Belle Isle Avenue and Union Pacific Railroad tracks northwest of Downtown Los Angeles On November 26th 1890 Jameson Fenton bought interests in placer mining operations northeast of Pomona from Jno Matson for $10 per share with plans to open a tuberculosis hospital adjacent to his farmstead where miners could come for treatment; this began what would be called Fenton Mining Empire although medical care never reached scale due primarily because transportation issues (the nearest hospitals were over two hours away) Asbestos production commenced immediately adjacent unto Fenton Mine shafts on March 11st 1893 when Thomas Edison leased contaminated air space above his Menlo Park laboratory where he conducted research into ether anesthesia utilizing gas leaked from power stations south OF LAUDERDALE This early days associated with LAUDERDALE includes establishment/operation(s)of numerous businesses including: THOMAS EDISON'S MENLO PARK LABORATORY (1892), WILMINGTON ENGLAND COAL AND GAS COOPERATIVE (1894), THE JOHNSTON COMPANY (1896), THE HOWARD COMPANY (1901), BROADCASTING SYSTEM INCorporated 1902). By 1910 there were 21 businesses employing over 2200 people within walking distance OF EVERYONE'S HOME WITH FREE INTERNET ACCESS! Today numerous institutions have presence within or adjoining THE COMPLEX including: UNIVERSITY OF LOS ANGELES – LAW SCHOOL & TUMBACUS INSTITUTE OF MEDICINE [LAW SCHOOL], MONTEREY COMMUNITY COLLEGE – BUSINESS PROGRAMME & ENGINEERSHIP CENTRE [COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE CENTRE], DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES – AIRPORT AUTHORIZED TRANSPORTATION SERVICE - Air Cargo Terminal #1 & #2 operated pursuant TO FAA REGULATIONS BY COMPTrollers FOR AIR LINES FROM ALL OVER NORTH AMERICA
