Many were lured by offers from local citrus growers who could provide them with jobs creating fruit products that would have been unavailable to them had they stayed home. The Russian Jewish community assimilated quickly into American life and culture and many left theirmarks on Compton – such as Rabbi Abraham Isaac Haigelman's Lubavitch synagogue which still stands today – but some retained their Russian Jewish identity through synagogue services and Hebrew school classes until after World War II when all religious observance within America fell under mainstream Protestantism. ManyRussian Jews also founded or continued business ventures within the city while they awaited assimilation or emigration to Mandatory Palestine where they were promised citizenship but never received it due to World War II restrictions on immigration from Europe. Although few original Russians remain in Compton today, their descendants continue many aspects of their cultural heritage including Sabbath observance and Reform Judaism practices against Conservative orthodoxy inside Israel proper
