In 1852 Captain James Wolkowicz of the brig "Nova" discoveredanga () north of Point Reyes Station while exploring along the northern coast of Marin County; he called this spot "Wolkowicz's Hill". In 1853 Comstock applied for incorporation as a town but no vote was taken because there were only five people living in Compton at that time. On February 14, 1854, however, Compton residents voted unanimously to become a city under the name of "Compton." The first mayor was Postmaster General Augustus Woodward (1854-58). The first councilmember was Averell Harriman (1858-60). On January 1, 1861 Compton became one of 36 cities incorporated within California during the American Civil War because many soldiers had come through that county looking for food and shelter from the Confederate Army. The war ended with Union troops taking over all Southern California excepting Compton which remained with Confederate forces until 1865 following General Ulysses S Grant's surrender at Appomattox Court House
