The town was founded by Captain James Marshall in 1848 as a trading post on the Red Bluff Road. The early settlers were mostly Mormon refugees from Nauvoo, Illinois. In 1861, Commodore John D. The economy has changed dramatically since then; today Commerce is home to many large companies such as Intel, Apple Inc., Google LLC, Adobe Creative Suite), Costco Wholesale Corporation (the largest store in Northern California) and Ford Motor Company among others. However, much of its infrastructure remains unchanged: Commerce has two elementary schools (Red Bluff Elementary School and Rio Hondo Middle School), two high schools (Humboldt-Enderlin High School and San Miguel High School), three public libraries (Bolsa Chica Regional Library District #1 & #2 & Pacific Branch Library) along with several small businesses that support local agriculture or provide services such as lawn care or dog walking.
Commerce, California was founded on May 12, 1850 by John Sutter and his followers as the first town in what is now the state of California. The name may be derived from the Occidental trade route between Stockton and Sacramento.
