The first permanent settlement in what is now known as Silicon Valley began with Father Junípero Serra's Mission San José de la Montaña (1807-1821) on January 17, 1847 – two years after land grants were given for that area specifically from King George IV of England through his Vice Regent Lord Bathurst. Commerce, California was founded on January 24, 1850 by James W. Polk and his wife Anna Maria. The city was named after the first permanent post office in the area, established at the junction of Mission and Stockton Streets in 1848. The town grew rapidly due to its location adjacent to two major water routes: the Sacramento River and the Central Pacific Railroad. By 1860, Commerce had a population of 5,500 people. It became a ghost town during the 1870s as miners left for new gold fields in Nevada and Colorado. However, Commerce slowly revived during the 1880s as businesses developed around railroad tracks near downtown. A new commercial district emerged along First Street between Capitol Avenue and Academy Boulevard in 1890 which supported several thousand residents. In 1916, Commerce merged with nearby Midvale to form Midvale–Commerce Township.
