On September 17, 1861, three men from Commerce founded the first cotton gin in Kern County. The cotton gin was located near what is now downtown Commerce and it processed up to 2 million pounds of Cotton a day. In 1865, two brothers named George and John Wickersham started a grocery store in what is now the downtown core of Commerce. They sold groceries such as flour, sugar, butter and eggs until 1906 when they moved to larger quarters on Main Street north of town square where they continued to operate under their original name until 1938 when they changed it to Wickersham's grocery store Incorporated (later known as Chevron Corporation). In 1948–1949 an interstate route 66 bypassed Township 7 south of town square; this made Commerce one of the few towns along that route without any direct road access however commerce has since become increasingly connected through Interstate 5 with nearby Bakersfield
