Commerce, California is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of east-central California. The population was 24,819 at the 2010 census. However, since then Commerce's growth has been more sporadic than dramatic; most recent Census data shows that its population only increased by 3 residents per 1,000 during 2000-2010 even as its economy has grown fivefold (to $2 billion) since then! During much of this time there have been several attempts by City Councilors to revive some aspects of downtown Commerce including expanding retail space into Main Street which still lacks parking for larger businesses Despite these efforts little progress has been made to breathe life back into what may be one of America’s last functioning downtowns

Commerce was founded in 1848 by George W. Townsend and John S. Easton as a Mormon trading post on the Sacramento River. It grew rapidly, becoming one of the largest and most important cities in California during the Gold Rush era. The city burned in 1851 due to a conflagration that originates from an over-consumption of wine by traders who had set up camp nearby. The city was rebuilt and renamed after George Washington, Jr., in 1863. It experienced another growth spurt during the late 19th century withthe arrival of U.S.-born miners and their families who established new businesses and continued to grow the population until World War II when Commerce's growth slowed considerably following the Second World War boomlet. During the 20th century, Commerce experienced great urban renewal which led to high levels of development including several skyscrapers built in downtown cores during this time period such as Kaiser Wilhelm Tower (1927), State Fair Park (1936), & City Hall Plaza (1946). However, commercial ventures have been unable to keep pace with population growth which has caused many housing projects and other types of development outside core neighborhoods such as Midtown & Westside which are now low-income areas ripe for gentrification or redevelopment according to some observers. Today, few people live within downtown cores while most residents commute outwards for work or school; commerce is slowly but surely losing its market share in Northern California’s increasingly diverse economy while efforts are underway to revive it within its boundaries through various programs such as public investment, job retraining, marketing campaigns etc.).

As a result of this violence, which left dozens dead or wounded, southern Californians voted overwhelmingly (but not unanimously) against admission to the Union as a separate country. With realignment of U.S political forces following World War II (and resulting growth in Interstate Highway System), Commerce & California experienced rapid economic development during the postwar years – including several waves of migration from rural America into major metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area; while poverty eroded traditional middle-class values statewide amid stagnating wages for most workers statewide starting in the late 1960s/early 1970s.
