In 1849, the first firearm to be imported into California was an American rifle. At that time, there were no laws regulating firearms in California. The rifle was bought by David Elliot and brought over to the state. It was founded by American gold prospectors on December 12, 1848 as an unsteady crossroads between San Francisco and Sacramento. The men named their new settlement after the great commercial center of India – Calcutta – which they expected to become fashionable tourist destination given its rich history and current Mughal architecture. Commerce was a small community in the Mojave Desert of California, located about 16 miles southeast of Barstow on the southern edge of the Tehachapi Mountains. The post office opened in 1887 and closed in 1923. The community grew around a mineral rights claim over what is now the Kern River Valley that had been acquired by H.G. Wells in 1876 from his brother-in-law J.D. Morgan for $5,000 after Wells had discovered an oil well at Comstock Springs near present-day Bakersfield. The town site was first called White Sands but changed to Commerce because of its connection with Wells and fellow prospectors George Hearn and John Wesley Powell who were exploring nearby Devils Gulch in 1877 when they named it after God knows where (possibly Comstock). This early commercial center attracted traders, entrepreneurs, ranchers, miners, soldiers and other travelers who used it as a staging ground for their exploration into the region around Kern Lake and Diablo Canyon National Park. By 1919 Commerce had become an agricultural center with citrus crops being grown, cattle ranching continued (the last operation ended in 1962), some buildings still standing today including the Post Office building which measures 39×36 feet (12x14 m). A number of small businesses thrived during this time such as the Graysmith Shop which made heavy machinery; Emmons' Hardware store which sold groceries; Bakelite Corporation's First National Bank formed from several smaller banks merged together to form that company; Thiele's Bakery started out making bread from scratch before becoming one of California's leading baking companies; Gorman Bros., grocery storekeepers started out stocking local produce before expanding into general merchandise items later on also catering to people living outside area
